We had Dan Jones in the Haven earlier this year with his amazing collection, and we immediately fell for him AND his collection! We chatted with Dan to get to know him a bit better!
How does Dan Jones start his morning off?
Dan Jones really loves to sleep! Sadly, that's not how most of my morning are spent. Most mornings I am woken by a phone call from my darling Director of Sales, Krystal Ryan - she's the oil that keeps the machine running. Krystal lets me know who I’m seeing, when I’m seeing them, updates me with any information I need to know from around the world…Rupert Murdoch would kill to have 2 people as efficient as us!
My apartment has a huge New York style window that looks over a bustling laneway in Sydney’s vibrant Potts Point. I generally bask in the sunlight, (generally in my underwear and my wolf night hat) listening to Krystal, watching and wondering why people would get up so early and line up for a cup of coffee.
We live on a massive island that's mostly uninhabited, at the bottom of the globe surrounded by magnificent blue oceans, vibrantly coloured corals and circled by vicious sharks…what's not cool about that!?
Why are Australians so cool right now?
Anyone who knows me will be able to scream the answer out before me… Celine Dion. She’s an incredibly beautiful woman, she’s extremely talented, I find her gracious, humble and she’s got the cutest sense of humour. She has all the qualities that I love about women. (Thanks for the Canadian love, Dan!)
Who is the dream woman that you would love to dress in your Urbridaled collection? (dead or alive!)
I fell in love with LoversLand the day I arrived in Toronto. There is an effortless air of coolness and honesty in the LoversLand approach, which really resonates with me. Honesty is a very important part of the Dan Jones brand, as is being cool about it. When I say 'cool' I’m not referencing a skater boy either. I had found in my previous experiences that the bridal industry can be filled with pushy sales techniques, a whole lot of over compensating and even more smoke and mirrors.
Our approach at Dan Jones is completely the opposite. Whilst we understand that a wedding is a very important day for many [couples] across the globe, buying ‘The Dress' should be a memorable, stress free, and most importantly, fun experience.
I was completely mesmerized by the Haven in LoversLand, I felt like a kid in a cubby house, and to be honest, I didn’t want to leave. I saw how much girls enjoyed trying on designer gowns with their friends and I could smell the excitement in the air every time I went into the Haven. I enjoyed many laughs and I shared some tears (happy ones only!). It's important for me to visit every potential stockist before signing my brand to the store. We only align the Dan Jones brand with stores that we feel will best represent the brand and cater to our clients. This was certainly the case with LoversLand, I can’t recall the amount of times I’ve begged to come back!! (Please come back!)
I felt I could bring a missing piece. The market is saturated with outdated, over priced gowns the world over. Brides are always looking for that 'something different.' Dan Jones is an effortless fusion of luxe fabrics, stunning silhouettes and impeccable craftsmanship. I focus on creating a stunning gown rather then a wedding dress as such. An incredible dress can make a girl not only look but feel a million dollars, and I think thats what most brides want on their wedding day. The more and more I travel, I realize that there isn’t really any other designer doing what I do. I don’t use mood boards, I don’t follow fashion trends, I don’t watch seasonal catwalk shows…It's important for me to keep it as pure as I can, I think that helps us stand out from the rest.
Words of advice to any bride?
Take your time. Don’t forget to enjoy it. It all comes together in the end.
